UPDATE: A tragic incident in Istanbul has left a Turkish-German family of four dead, likely due to poisoning from pesticide gas in their hotel, according to preliminary reports from Turkey’s state-run news agency. The Bocek family, who had arrived from Germany, checked into a hotel in the Fatih district on November 12, 2025. Shortly after their arrival, they fell ill and sought medical treatment. They returned to the hotel but experienced a severe deterioration in health the following day, leading to a second hospital visit. Tragically, their children, Kadir Muhammet, just 6 years old, and Masal, only 3, died that same day. Their mother, Cigdem Bocek, succumbed to the illness on November 14, and their father, Servet Bocek, passed away on November 17.
Preliminary autopsy results indicate the family was poisoned by phosphine gas, a toxic insecticide used to combat pests. This was confirmed by swab samples taken from various surfaces in their hotel room, including towels and masks. Authorities have ruled out food poisoning, dismissing initial suspicions regarding street food consumed during their stay in the city.
