UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded at Garrapata State Beach in Big Sur as authorities confirmed the recovery of the body of a 7-year-old girl who was swept into the ocean by a massive wave on Friday. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office announced that the girl’s body was located approximately 100 yards offshore around 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, half a mile north of her last known location.
The child, initially reported as 5 years old, was later confirmed by family members to be 7. Tragically, her father, 39-year-old Yuji Hu from Calgary, Alberta, also lost his life while attempting to rescue her.
EARLIER: The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a large wave pulled both father and daughter away from the shore. Hu’s wife, who was with them, managed to return to safety but witnessed the harrowing scene. An off-duty California State Parks officer and a beach visitor saw the family in distress and rushed to help. The officer was able to pull Hu from the water and immediately began administering CPR, but it was too late; he was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
The mother was treated for mild hypothermia and is in stable condition. A 2-year-old child present during the incident was unharmed.
A multi-agency search effort involving the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, California State Parks, Cal Fire, and the U.S. Coast Guard commenced immediately after the incident. Unfortunately, the search for the girl was suspended late Saturday night, although California State Parks has committed to maintaining personnel on-site for shoreline searches.
