Urgent Update: 70 Dachshunds Arrive at Jacksonville Shelter, Adoption Surge Follows

UPDATE: A remarkable surge in dachshund adoptions is sweeping through Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) as over 70 dachshunds arrive at the shelter, spurred by a viral TikTok video from local creator Bethany Michel. The shelter is currently promoting free adoptions to ensure these lovable “wiener dogs” find forever homes.

This week, ACPS welcomed 16 dachshunds on-site, with many finding new homes almost immediately. The shelter’s Chief, Michael Bricker, confirmed that the influx of these dogs originated from an overwhelmed breeder, leading to a rapid response from ACPS officers. The shelter has already seen approximately 10 dachshunds adopted and another six placed with rescue groups.

The viral impact of Michel’s TikTok video, which exceeded 1.5 million views, has been a game changer. “I never expected to reach so many people,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to spreading awareness about ACPS’s mission. The positive response has been overwhelming, as the shelter even had to post a sign indicating that no dachshunds were currently available for adoption.

Bricker noted the broader impact of this surge, stating, “These 16 dachshunds actually helped an additional 20-25 dogs get adopted that probably wouldn’t have found homes so quickly.” The increased visibility has not only spotlighted the dachshunds but also the approximately 300 other dogs eagerly waiting for families.

Looking ahead, ACPS predicts the arrival of another 30 dachshunds next week, with more potentially following. To keep the community engaged, ACPS is leveraging its social media platforms, especially Facebook, to announce upcoming availability. The shelter is also running a free adoption promotion throughout the month, aligning with their “clear the cages” campaign—an ideal opportunity for potential pet owners.

Additionally, adoptable dogs will be featured at the Jacksonville Jaguars game this weekend during their “tailgate” event, further increasing chances for these animals to find loving families.

The rapid adoption of these dachshunds underscores the significant role social media plays in animal welfare. As interest surges, ACPS remains focused on ensuring every dog finds a loving home.
