Urgent Update: 2,000 American Crystal Workers Return After Strike
URGENT UPDATE: After a week-long strike, 2,000 workers from the Grain Millers Union are set to return to their jobs at seven American Crystal Sugar Company plants, following a decisive vote of over 85% in favor of a new three-year contract. The agreement, reached late on October 23, 1971, marks a significant resolution to the labor dispute that halted operations at critical facilities across the region.
The union members voted overwhelmingly, with results indicating over 900 votes in favor and just over 100 against, according to Eugene Panzer, District Two secretary. The newly accepted contract includes a substantial 32% pay increase, with a 12% raise in the first year and further increments over the following two years. This development is crucial for the local economy, especially in the Red River Valley, where four of the affected plants are located in Drayton, Crookston, Moorhead, and East Grand Forks.
Union meetings were held simultaneously at all local branches on Saturday, with the results quickly relayed to the leadership. Panzer communicated the outcomes to all local union presidents and informed Roy Wellborn, the International Union president, who expressed satisfaction with the resolution. “Everyone is happy about the settlement,” Panzer stated.
Operations at the mills are expected to resume immediately, with plans for workers to return as quickly as possible. Panzer noted that the Drayton plant had workers back on duty as of Saturday night, aiming to begin production shortly thereafter. “It will be a slow process,” he explained, “as we need to get all machinery and systems operational again.”
The strike began after negotiations between the company and union officials broke down last Sunday, with the previous contract expiring on August 1. The new agreement introduces various improvements in fringe benefits, including enhanced severance programs, disability payments, and increased medical coverage. Workers will also benefit from an additional holiday and increased pay for night shifts and holiday work.
This strike’s resolution not only restores jobs for thousands but also strengthens the economic stability of the region. As operations ramp back up, all eyes will be on the American Crystal Sugar plants to see how quickly they can reach full capacity and support the local workforce.
