URGENT UPDATE: Residents on San Antonio’s Southeast Side are calling for increased police presence following a chilling attempted break-in that was captured on home surveillance cameras. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. last Sunday, when a man was seen entering the backyard of homeowners Harrison and Savana Yount.
Savana Yount described the moment as “creepy,” recalling how she reviewed the footage and immediately dialed 911. The video footage reveals a shadowy figure trying to open their back door after knocking on their window. Thanks to the swift action of the Younts, police apprehended the suspect shortly after they placed their call.
“My big thing was I didn’t want to confront him and spook him,” Harrison Yount explained. “I wanted the police to be able to get here and get him.”
Officials from the San Antonio Police Department reported that the man was experiencing a mental health crisis, but further details remain undisclosed. This incident highlights a growing concern among residents regarding crime and safety in their neighborhood.
In addition to the attempted break-in, local residents are worried about escalating gun violence in the area. A neighbor named Amber expressed fear, saying, “It’s pretty scary ‘cause you never know what people are intending to do.”
Crime statistics indicate that this issue is not unique to the Southeast Side. Homeowners are increasingly anxious about the lack of police visibility in their community, especially since the closure of Kate Schenck Elementary, which previously prompted regular patrols. “There has been a lot less officers patrolling the area because the school is no longer there,” said one concerned resident.
Despite these challenges, some community members find solace in knowing their neighbors. “We know our neighbors, we love the neighborhood,” Savana Yount remarked. “So this was a huge eye opener, kinda one of those just very unexpected things.”
Residents are now advocating for greater police presence and community engagement to enhance safety in their neighborhood. As the situation develops, it remains critical for local authorities to address these concerns.
Stay tuned for further updates as residents continue to voice their demands for a safer community.
