UPDATE: A devastating fire has completely engulfed the Kehl’s Legacy Funeral Home in Anchorage, Alaska, causing enormous structural damage. The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) confirmed that no injuries have been reported and everyone is accounted for as of this morning.
Firefighters responded to the scene on December 16, 2023, where they found the building fully ablaze. Megan Peters, an AFD spokesperson, stated, “There is enormous structural damage.” Fire investigators have been unable to enter the building due to the risk of falling debris.
As of around noon today, AFD crews continue to monitor the heavily damaged structure, where hot spots are still flaring up. “Crews are rotating in and out of the scene as the frigid cold takes a toll on the apparatus, not to mention the crews themselves,” AFD reported on social media. Firefighters worked through the night, battling the intense flames while managing the challenges posed by extreme temperatures.
The funeral home has declined to comment on the incident at this time. This fire adds to a series of urgent responses by AFD, which recently dealt with other significant fires, including a car wash blaze in the Mat-Su area.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for the latest developments on this urgent situation.
