UPDATE: The University of Maine Black Bears have clinched their fifth consecutive victory, defeating Stony Brook with a final score of 28-14 on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Morse Field in Alfond Stadium, Orono. This marks the first five-game winning streak for UMaine since the 2018 season, when they made history by reaching the Football Championship Subdivision playoff semifinals.
UMaine’s victory propels their overall record to 5-4 and 4-1 in the Coastal Athletic Association, while Stony Brook falls to 4-5 and 2-3. The game’s critical moments unfolded early in the third quarter, when the Black Bears scored two touchdowns just 2:23 apart, establishing a commanding 21-point lead.
The Black Bears entered halftime leading 14-7 after a solid nine-play, 69-yard drive by Stony Brook that concluded with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quinn Boyd to Dez Williams with just 13 seconds remaining in the half.
However, the second half belonged to UMaine. Graduate student quarterback Carter Peevy opened the scoring with a 1-yard rushing touchdown after leading a seven-play, 79-yard drive. Peevy’s impressive performance continued with a 14-yard touchdown pass to freshman running back Daniel Batch, marking Batch’s first career touchdown.
“We executed our game plan well and stayed focused,” said Peevy after the game.
Despite a brief resurgence from Stony Brook, which included a 1-yard touchdown run by Roland Dempster late in the third quarter, UMaine’s defense held strong. The Black Bears recovered an onside kick to secure the win, demonstrating their determination and resilience throughout the match.
Peevy completed 14 of 25 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns, though he faced challenges with two interceptions. He also contributed on the ground, rushing for 51 yards on nine carries. Running back Sincere Baines led the ground attack with 86 yards on 12 carries.
UMaine’s defense was pivotal, limiting Stony Brook’s Dempster—who entered the game averaging 111.3 rushing yards per game—to just 22 yards. The Black Bears also tallied five sacks, showcasing their defensive prowess.
As the Black Bears prepare for their upcoming match against Hampton next Saturday at 1 p.m., this victory not only boosts their season but also reignites hope for fans eager to see the team back in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Stony Brook will host North Carolina A&T at noon next week, looking to bounce back from this setback.
The energy at Morse Field was palpable as the Black Bears celebrated their latest achievement, and fans are already buzzing about the potential for continued success as the season progresses.
