The White House has announced a three-part plan aimed at addressing escalating unrest in Minnesota following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by a Border Patrol agent over the weekend. This incident marks the second killing of a resident by federal law enforcement in three weeks and has intensified tensions between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and anti-ICE protesters in the area.
During a news conference on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt outlined the proposed measures, which are backed by President Donald Trump. Following a call with Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz, Trump expressed optimism about cooperation: “It was a very good call, and we, actually, seemed to be on a similar wavelength,” he stated.
Details of the Proposed Plan
Leavitt detailed the components of the plan, emphasizing Trump’s desire for a swift end to the chaos. The three key points include:
- State and local officials must transfer undocumented immigrants currently in state or local jails to federal authorities, particularly those with active warrants or criminal histories for immediate deportation.
- Local law enforcement agencies will be required to assist in the apprehension and detention of undocumented immigrants arrested by police.
- Local police will work with federal authorities to locate and detain undocumented immigrants wanted for crimes.
Leavitt noted that these measures are already in place in nearly every other state, suggesting that their implementation could reduce the need for federal support in Minnesota.
Trump also announced via a post on Truth Social that Tom Homan, the Border Czar, would visit Minnesota later that day. Trump described Homan as “tough but fair” and emphasized that he would report directly to him. When questioned about Homan’s involvement, Leavitt denied any dissatisfaction with the current ICE response, stating, “Mr. Homan is doing an exceptional job.”
Investigation Continues Amid Tensions
The circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death remain under investigation, with conflicting accounts and videos circulating. Leavitt confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, stating, “We’re looking, we’re reviewing everything and will come out with a determination.” Trump further indicated that immigration enforcement would eventually be withdrawn from Minneapolis, saying, “At some point we will leave.”
This recent unrest follows the January 7 shooting of Renee Nicole Good, also 37, by an ICE officer after she allegedly attempted to strike him with her vehicle. As the situation unfolds, residents and officials alike await further clarity from federal authorities.
