UPDATE: A routine traffic stop in southwest Oklahoma turned into an incredible emergency when Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Shelby delivered a baby on the highway just before an ambulance could arrive. This unexpected event unfolded on November 22 as Trooper Shelby was dispatched to assist with traffic control for a woman in active labor.
As he approached the scene, Shelby saw a black Chevrolet Camaro parked on the shoulder, the passenger door wide open, with the expectant mother inside. Initially there to provide reassurance, the situation escalated rapidly. “The baby is coming!” the woman exclaimed, prompting Shelby to respond, “Well, don’t push!” Yet, it was too late. Within moments, he found himself in the unexpected position of delivering a baby.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that the baby was delivered within seconds, with Trooper Shelby later downplaying his role, stating, “All I did was play catch.” The ambulance arrived shortly thereafter, transporting both the mother and her newborn son, named Finley, to a hospital for further care.
Miraculously, both mother and baby are reported to be doing well. “We’re happy to report that both mother and baby are doing great!” OHP stated in a follow-up announcement. Following the delivery, Shelby quickly returned to his regular patrol duties, ready for his next call.
The OHP highlighted that their troopers undergo medical training that includes the basics of childbirth, although such situations are rare. “Our medical training includes the basics of delivering a baby – something we hope we don’t encounter often – but when the moment comes, our troopers are ready to help,” the agency explained. They expressed joy for the family and gratitude that Trooper Shelby could assist during their moment of need.
Interestingly, roadside deliveries aren’t entirely uncommon. Earlier this year, a couple in Michigan welcomed their baby in a McDonald’s parking lot during an urgent rush to the hospital.
