Thousands Honor Fallen Delaware State Police Cpl. Snook Today

UPDATE: Thousands are expected to pay their final respects today to fallen Delaware State Police Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook at the University of Delaware. The public viewing is underway from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bob Carpenter Center, followed by a Celebration of Life ceremony from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., which will include a 21-gun salute and flyover.

The procession began early this morning, with law enforcement and first responders gathering at the Christiana Mall before traveling to the university. Authorities closed the southbound lanes of I-95 around 6:30 a.m. to accommodate the procession, affecting traffic between the mall and the university near Rt. 896.

Cpl. Snook tragically lost his life on December 23, 2023, while working overtime at a DMV in Minquadale, Delaware. Reports reveal that he heroically pushed an employee to safety during the shooting, urging others to flee as he was shot again.

The 10-year veteran leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old daughter. In light of the expected heavy traffic, all 13,000 students of the Christina School District will participate in virtual learning today.

With over 3,000 additional vehicles anticipated in the area, officials urge the public to exercise caution. This solemn event serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers daily.

As friends, family, and community members gather to honor Cpl. Snook, the impact of his sacrifice is felt deeply throughout the region. This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
