Thousands Clash with NYPD in Urgent Protest Against Conscription
UPDATE: A chaotic protest erupted in Midtown Manhattan on October 15, 2023, as thousands of Orthodox Jewish demonstrators clashed with NYPD officers. The protesters, numbering over 10,000, rallied against what they describe as the mistreatment of Orthodox Jews in Israel and the enforcement of military conscription.
The demonstration began earlier in the day, drawing attention to grievances regarding military policies that many feel are unfairly targeting their community. As evening fell, the crowd spilled into the streets near the Israeli Consulate at 800 2nd Ave, causing significant traffic disruptions. NYPD officers struggled to contain the situation, utilizing barricades and megaphones to direct the throngs back onto the sidewalks.
“Americans are unaware of Israel’s horrific treatment of Orthodox Jews,” said Rabbi Issac Green. He emphasized that the community feels persecuted rather than protected by Israeli authorities, citing incidents such as night raids and arrests of Yeshiva students. “Israel should not force Orthodox Jews to join an anti-religious army to fight wars against their religion.”
The protest was organized by the Central Rabbinical Congress and supported by prominent figures within the Orthodox community, including leaders from the Satmar sect. Families of all ages participated, with some demonstrators even climbing on trash cans and bike racks to amplify their voices.
As the crowd swelled, tensions escalated. Police attempted to manage the situation, but many protesters ignored commands to return to the sidewalks, resulting in several confrontations. Officers were seen grappling with demonstrators as they pushed through the barricades.
Despite the intense clashes, police sources report that no arrests were made during the chaotic evening. As the protest continued into the night, the atmosphere was charged with emotion, highlighting the community’s deep-seated frustrations with current policies.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further developments are expected as the protest continues. The public is urged to stay clear of Midtown Manhattan as traffic disruptions are likely to persist.
This urgent protest underscores the ongoing conflict surrounding military conscription in Israel and its impact on Orthodox Jewish communities, raising significant awareness and concern among both local and international observers.
