Speed Limit Cut on Kuakini Highway to Boost Safety Near Kona
UPDATE: In a significant move to enhance safety, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has just announced a reduction in the speed limit on Kuakini Highway near Kona. Effective in 30 days, the speed limit will be cut from 55 mph to 45 mph between mile markers 113.6 and 117.1.
This vital change aims to protect both residents and visitors frequenting community hubs, including Harold H. Higashihara Park and Kamakana Playground. These areas serve as gathering spots for families, children, and the elderly, making it crucial to ensure their safety on this busy stretch of roadway.
The new speed limit reflects HDOT’s commitment to road safety and is part of an ongoing initiative to create a safer environment for all. According to the official release, “The purpose of the speed reduction is to provide a manageable, safe and consistent speed limit for this section of Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 11).”
Motorists should prepare for the transition as updated signage is set to be installed within the month. The speed limit changes will apply to both directions of travel, impacting daily commuters and visitors alike. This move is expected to significantly reduce the risk of accidents in an area that features not only recreational spaces but also places of worship and scenic lookout points.
In addition to lowering speed limits, HDOT is also implementing various strategies to streamline traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety, such as constructing roundabouts and elevated pedestrian crossings. The overarching goal is to minimize serious injuries and fatalities while promoting an efficient transportation system.
Residents and regular drivers in the area are encouraged to stay informed and adjust their driving habits accordingly. The new speed limit will foster a safer, more neighborly environment, protecting everyone from keiki enjoying the park to kupuna visiting the church.
As this development unfolds, stay tuned for further updates on safety measures and traffic improvements in the Kona area. Share this information to ensure that all road users are aware of the new speed regulations and the commitment to community safety.
