UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, Soquel High’s boys water polo team faced off against the dominant Sacred Heart Prep (SHP) but fell short with a score of 10-7 in the Central Coast Section Open Division semifinals, held at Gilroy High on November 2, 2023. This marks a significant moment as the Knights (23-5 overall) aimed to dethrone the 17-time champions but were ultimately outmatched in a dramatic second half.
The Knights entered halftime with a narrow lead of 6-5, showcasing their determination against the defending champions with a commendable performance. “We showed up not just to compete; we had the attitude and mindset to win,” said Knights coach Ryan Chapatte. “You’re not gonna beat a team like Sacred Heart if you don’t truly believe you can do it.”
Despite a valiant effort, the Gators (19-6) surged in the second half, scoring 5 goals while limiting Soquel to just 1. The Knights struggled with foul trouble, allowing SHP to capitalize on extra-man opportunities. “Our offense went stagnant,” Chapatte explained, reflecting on the team’s challenges against the Gators’ zone defense.
Knights junior goalie Rafael Suarez-Abraham made crucial saves early in the game, while junior Sam Robertson led the scoring for Soquel with three goals in the first half. The team executed their game plan effectively, registering assists on five of their first six goals.
Despite the loss, Soquel’s journey does not end here. By advancing to the semifinals, they have secured a spot in the upcoming CIF NorCal Regional playoffs. The Knights will learn their division placement, seed, and first-round opponent on Sunday, with the regional playoffs set to begin on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
SHP will now face No. 2 Menlo (21-7), who narrowly defeated No. 6 Saint Francis 8-7 in the other semifinal, for the Open title on Saturday at 4:05 p.m.. As the Gators continue their quest for a 14th consecutive title, the Knights can reflect on a season that has seen them achieve new heights, including becoming the first team from Santa Cruz County to win an Open Division game earlier in the playoffs.
The resilience and spirit displayed by the Knights serve as a testament to their growth and potential as they prepare for the next chapter in their postseason journey.
