UPDATE: In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Sholan Farms in Leominster has just distributed an impressive 3,200 pounds of surplus apples to local food pantries and organizations, ensuring that families in need will have fresh produce for Thanksgiving. On November 12, 2025, over two dozen volunteers gathered to pack the apples into more than 900 bags, demonstrating the power of collective effort during this crucial holiday season.
The dedicated team worked tirelessly from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., packing 80 bushels of various apple types to support those facing food insecurity. Joanne DiNardo, President of Friends of Sholan Farms, expressed her gratitude for the abundance this year, stating, “Sholan Farms has been truly blessed with apples, volunteers, and a great staff.” After a challenging 2024 season where the farm had to purchase apples, this year’s excess harvest has allowed them to give back significantly to the community.
The apples were distributed to several local entities, including Our Lady of the Lake, St. Anna, St. Leo, and Ginny’s Helping Hand, which recently reported a significant rise in the need for food assistance due to escalating grocery prices. Executive Director Brandon Robbins highlighted the importance of these donations, saying, “Sholan Farms’ donation of over 200 bags of apples brings something truly special to our Holiday Food Baskets of Hope.”
In a remarkable effort, Ginny’s Helping Hand also received 5,440 pounds of nonperishable food collected from a drive at Fall Brook Elementary School. Robbins noted that this year they faced a “significant increase in requests” for food baskets compared to previous years, emphasizing the importance of community support.
The local community rallied together, with DiNardo thanking the hardworking volunteers and orchard managers for their relentless efforts. She praised the teamwork involved, saying, “What amazing team effort.” Videos shared on social media captured the busy atmosphere at Sholan Farms, showcasing the enthusiastic volunteers in action.
The impact of these efforts goes beyond just providing food; it fosters a sense of hope and unity among residents. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, these initiatives are vital in ensuring that no family goes hungry during the holidays. As the community prepares for the celebrations, the contributions from Sholan Farms and its partners highlight the importance of generosity and support.
As we look ahead, community members are encouraged to continue supporting local efforts, ensuring everyone can share in the joy of the holiday season. The ongoing commitment from organizations like Sholan Farms and Ginny’s Helping Hand illustrates the incredible impact that local initiatives can have on those in need.
