URGENT UPDATE: Sharon Simpson, a cherished matriarch and community figure, has passed away peacefully at home on October 31, 2025, at the age of 92. Her family confirmed she died of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.
Born on April 24, 1933, in Fresno, CA, Sharon experienced both joy and tragedy early in life. She lost her brother, Story, in a tragic car accident at just 16. In 1953, Sharon moved to Santa Cruz, CA, with her infant son, Mark, where her life took a pivotal turn.
Sharon met her soulmate, Jim Simpson, at the Edgewater Bar in Capitola, and their love story is the stuff of legends. A memorable tale recounts how floodwaters from the San Lorenzo River separated them in 1955, yet their bond was unshakeable. They married that same year and welcomed four children: KC, Christina, Tony, and Stephanie, creating a close-knit family.
In the 1970s, Sharon contributed to her community as a teacher’s aide at Harbor High School and later opened The Clothes Cottage, a beloved consignment shop in Capitola. She thrived in this role, surrounded by friends, fashion, and jewelry, reflecting her vibrant spirit.
Sharon and Jim enjoyed a fulfilling retirement filled with travel, marking over five decades of marriage before his battle with Alzheimer’s led to his passing in 2011. Even in her final moments, Sharon expressed her enduring love for Jim, with her last wish being to call him for a ride home.
She is survived by her children Mark (Ann), KC (Pete), Christina (Jim), Tony, and Stephanie (Alex), as well as 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to Jennifer Gonzalez for her compassionate care and to the dedicated staff at Hospice of Santa Cruz County, who enabled Sharon to spend her final days at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at Sesnon House at Cabrillo College in Aptos, inviting friends and family to honor Sharon’s remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of Santa Cruz County.
Sharon Simpson’s passing marks a tremendous loss for her family and the community. Her stories, love, and indomitable spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew her.
