Senator Gallego Urges Action on Shutdown, Health Costs Soar
URGENT UPDATE: Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has issued a powerful call to action on MSNBC, condemning Republican leadership for their role in the ongoing government shutdown and escalating health care costs. During an interview with Ali Vitali, Gallego highlighted the immediate need to protect federal workers’ pay and prevent a dramatic spike in health insurance premiums for millions of Americans.
As the government remains paralyzed, concerns mount over the impact on families relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Gallego stressed the urgency, stating, “We proposed two bills that would take care of all government employees, as well as contractors that are not being paid right now.” He firmly stated, “We’re not going to give the power to the president to basically pick and choose to pay federal employees.”
The senator warned that under the current Republican plan, health care premiums could nearly double starting November 1, imposing a financial burden on families. In Arizona, the average family of four might see insurance costs surge by almost $3,400 annually, totaling nearly $7,600 a year. “They’re going to be paying $760 more in premiums essentially a month,” he noted, emphasizing the dire consequences for everyday Americans.
Gallego did not hold back in his criticism of GOP leaders, specifically targeting Senate Majority Whip John Thune and former President Donald Trump. He lamented, “What we’re looking at when it comes to true leadership coming from Thune, and the lack of leadership coming from Donald Trump, we don’t see anything.” Furthermore, he expressed concern over Representative Mike Johnson, who he claims has “just absolutely disappeared,” hindering Congress’s ability to address these urgent issues swiftly.
Gallego’s dual focus is clear: ensuring low insurance premiums for Americans and achieving a bipartisan agreement to reopen the government. “All we want is two things. Number one, keeping insurance premiums very low for as many Americans as possible. And number two, having a good deal when it comes to reopening the government, which again, we agree has to be a compromise,” he stated, signaling a willingness to negotiate across party lines.
As the clock ticks down to critical deadlines, Gallego’s remarks underscore the immediate need for decisive action from Washington. The stakes are high for families who could face soaring health care costs and disruptions in government services.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops. The urgency of these issues cannot be overstated—American families are depending on swift action from their leaders.
