Seattle Faces Urgent Flooding Threat as Atmospheric River Hits

UPDATE: The National Weather Service (NWS) has just issued an urgent warning for Seattle and surrounding regions as a powerful atmospheric river is set to drench the area from Friday, October 13, 2023, through Saturday night. Residents are urged to prepare for potential flooding as rainfall could reach between 2 to 4 inches, with localized amounts exceeding 5 inches in some areas.

Heavy rainfall is anticipated particularly in the Olympic Peninsula and parts of the Washington Cascades. The NWS predicts the Skokomish River will approach minor flood stage by Saturday, creating serious concerns for residents in Mason, Jefferson, Clallam, Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, and King counties.

Emergency response teams are already stretched thin, facing the dual threat of swollen rivers and flash flooding, especially in areas affected by recent wildfires. “We could see flash flooding or debris flows in burn scar regions,” warned NWS officials, emphasizing the compounded challenges for emergency services.

NWS meteorologists are keeping a close eye on ground saturation levels in urban areas, which could lead to nuisance flooding. Residents are strongly advised to clear drains of leaves and debris to avoid water accumulation.

Current conditions in Seattle are a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of Pacific Northwest autumns. The temperature is a cool 45°F with high humidity at 87%, while winds are gentle at 6 MPH. However, as the day progresses, rainfall is expected to intensify after 2 PM, with high temperatures peaking at a comfortable 56°F.

Looking ahead, the NWS warns Seattleites to brace for a sustained wet spell. Tonight, a 100% chance of rain is predicted, with lows around 51°F and wind gusts reaching up to 32 MPH. New rainfall amounts could range from half to three-quarters of an inch.

“A moderately strong atmospheric river will impact western Washington Friday through Saturday night,” NWS officials caution, highlighting the potent mix of weather factors that could lead to severe conditions.

Residents are advised to stay informed and monitor the latest river forecasts. With the risk of flooding and adverse weather conditions, vigilance is crucial as this situation develops.
