Santa Cruz Chili Cook-Off Returns with 55 Teams on Oct. 25

URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated annual Chili Cook-Off is set to return to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2023, featuring a record-breaking 55 teams competing for cash prizes, plaques, and, of course, bragging rights. This event promises an exciting day for chili enthusiasts, with tasting kits available for purchase starting at 10 a.m.

A portion of proceeds from each tasting kit—priced at $15 for eight sample cups—will directly benefit Haven of Hope, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting current and former foster youth since 1998. This community-centric initiative adds a meaningful touch to the flavorful competition, ensuring that every bite helps those in need.

The public tasting begins at 1 p.m., allowing attendees to sample a variety of meaty and vegetarian chili creations. Awards will be announced at 4 p.m. on the Pirate Ship Stage, recognizing the best entries in multiple categories including Best Amateur Red, Best Professional Vegetarian Red, and the coveted People’s Choice award.

Defending champions include the Ric’s Righteous team from San Jose, led by Ric Gilbert, who triumphed in both the Professional Vegetarian and Professional Meat categories last year. The Smokin Hot Chili team from Campbell and the Veggin’ Out team from Sunnyvale will also be back to defend their respective titles in the Amateur categories.

Attendees can expect not only a variety of chili options but also creative booth themes and lively competition. The atmosphere is set to be electric, drawing in both locals and visitors eager to taste the culinary creations.
