UPDATE: The San Pedro boys basketball team achieved a thrilling comeback victory against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings in the opening game of the Wiseburn Da Vinci Tournament on October 30, 2023. Trailing by a staggering 12 points at one stage, the Pirates rallied to force overtime and ultimately triumphed with a final score of 69-61.
This season opener showcased San Pedro’s resilience and determination, as they outscored their opponents 20-10 in the fourth quarter. San Pedro’s standout player, Ricky Alonso, played a pivotal role in the comeback, scoring 21 points, including an impressive 15 points during the crucial fourth quarter and overtime.
In a nail-biting overtime period, Palos Verdes took a brief lead of 58-57 after Luke Dalis made two free throws. However, San Pedro quickly responded with a decisive 6-0 run, pulling ahead to 63-58. Although Max Cui of Palos Verdes hit a three-pointer to narrow the gap to 63-61, Alonso sealed the victory with six consecutive free throws, two of which were awarded on an intentional foul.
Alonso reflected on the team’s performance, stating, “Guys were putting their head down in the early stages when we trailed by 12. Things then started going our way; we began making shots and mounting our comeback.”
Alongside Alonso, Chris Morgan contributed 15 points and Elias Redlew added 14 points to solidify the Pirates’ victory. Max Cui led all scorers with an impressive 28 points for Palos Verdes.
