UPDATE: An exciting new event is set to unfold in Humboldt County as runners prepare for a grueling 62-mile race connecting all five Murphy’s grocery stores on March 14. This unique footrace, dubbed the Murphy’s 100k, is drawing attention as participants aim to support local businesses and residents affected by a devastating fire earlier this year.
Organized by Pete Ciotti, a dedicated ultrarunner, the event is not only a test of endurance but also a fundraising initiative. Runners will embark from the Trinidad Murphy’s, traversing picturesque routes including Scenic Drive, Clam Beach, and the Hammond Coast Trail, before making their way to the Arcata Westwood Murphy’s and beyond. Aid stations will be set up at each location to support the participants.
With around 15 people already signed up since the announcement just yesterday, Ciotti encourages the community to join in. A relay option is also available, allowing teams to tackle the distance collaboratively.
Ciotti emphasized the importance of this event, stating,
“It’s a great way to get everyone moving and see all the cool spots around the area.”
He highlighted locations such as the Bay Trail and Trinidad, making it a scenic journey for all involved.
Moreover, the race serves a dual purpose. It aims to raise funds for those affected by the January 2 fire. While there is no registration fee, participants are encouraged to donate through the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. Murphy’s will further engage customers by allowing them to round up their purchases to support the cause in the week leading up to the race.
Ciotti expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Murphy’s was ‘stoked’ about the idea and will support the runners as well.” This collaboration not only showcases local spirit but also fosters community bonds in a time of need.
