Rev. Dr. Robert W. Blaney Passes Away at 94, Memorial Set for Dec. 27

URGENT UPDATE: Rev. Dr. Robert W. Blaney, a prominent figure in the Methodist community and a dedicated educator, has died at the age of 94 in Santa Cruz, California, on November 3, 2025. His passing marks the end of a remarkable journey in ministry and academia, leaving a profound impact on countless lives.

Blaney, who served as a pastor in Southern California and later taught at the University of the Pacific, was known for his commitment to social justice and advocacy for marginalized communities. Born in 1931, he received his Master’s in Divinity and a Doctorate in Theology from Boston University School of Theology, paving the way for a distinguished career that began in 1958.

Throughout his tenure, Blaney led critical discussions on ethics, social change, and faith, teaching courses like Social Ethics and Biomedical Ethics. He was instrumental in shaping the Religious Studies Department at UOP, serving as chair for many years until his retirement in 1996. He also orchestrated educational tours to Europe focused on important themes such as Christianity and Communism, especially relevant before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In addition to his academic contributions, Blaney was a passionate advocate for social justice, focusing on issues affecting farmworkers, the LGBTQ community, and other oppressed minorities. His work with the Council of Bishops’ Scholarship Program and various church committees reflects his unwavering commitment to education and equality in faith-based communities.

Following his retirement, Blaney and his wife, Laurel, relocated to Santa Cruz, where he continued to be an active member of the Aptos United Methodist Church. He chaired retreats for retired clergy and engaged in numerous activities that fostered community and support among church members.

Blaney is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Laurel, along with their daughters, Martha and Joy, and grandchildren David, Elizabeth, and Isabella. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.

A memorial service is scheduled for December 27, 2025, at 11 AM at the Aptos United Methodist Church. Friends, family, and community members are invited to honor Blaney’s legacy and contributions to faith and education.
