Phil X Shares Wild Stories from Bon Jovi and Rock Legends

UPDATE: Phil X, renowned guitarist for Bon Jovi since 2013, has opened up about his exhilarating experiences with rock icons in a newly released interview. Just days ahead of a triumphant tour with Triumph, X shared captivating stories about his adventures with legends like Chris Cornell, Alice Cooper, and Orianthi, revealing the thrill of his career in the fast-paced world of rock music.

In a recent conversation, X recounted his early days as a sought-after session player, working with artists from Rob Zombie to Chris Daughtry. His reputation skyrocketed, leading to collaborations that shaped his career. “If you’re doing your job, you’re having a blast doing your job,” he stated, reflecting on his journey. “I don’t get nervous on stage; it’s all about what you tell yourself.”

During his time with Chris Cornell, X described a memorable recording session for the track “Long Gone (Rock Version).” Initially feeling disappointed about missing Cornell, he received a last-minute call to contribute to the solo. “I walked in, and Chris asked, ‘What are you thinking for the solo?’” X recalled. His innovative technique, which he called “bouzouki tuning,” produced a unique sound that left Cornell impressed and the room in stitches.

X’s work with Alice Cooper was equally thrilling. After being recommended by Rob Zombie, he found himself recording on Cooper’s album “Brutal Planet.” “I just went nuts,” he shared, describing how he creatively manipulated guitar strings to achieve the desired sound. Cooper’s producer doubled X’s rate on the spot, marking a pivotal moment in his career.

The guitarist also highlighted his experiences with Orianthi, where he helped ease her nerves during recording sessions. “I said, ‘Hey, man, just chill out. Don’t look at the red light,’” X remembered, noting how she blossomed into a confident performer by the end of their project.

As for his relationship with Richie Sambora, who he replaced in Bon Jovi, X emphasized their camaraderie. “People were surprised to see us together,” he said, referring to their performance at a fundraiser for L.A. fire victims in early 2025. “It’s like, ‘Yeah… and we’re adults.’”

X also expressed excitement about his recent reunion with Rik Emmett of Triumph. After a brief collaboration at an NHL playoff game in Edmonton, X and Emmett discovered a shared musical chemistry that reignited a passion for performing together.

With the 50th anniversary of Triumph approaching in 2025, X is eager to hit the road again. “I can’t wait,” he declared, as he prepares to celebrate this monumental milestone with fans.

As Phil X gears up for a busy season of performances, his stories serve as a reminder of the vibrant connections and unforgettable moments that shape a career in rock music. Fans can expect electrifying shows as he joins Bon Jovi and Triumph on their upcoming tours.
