Operation Holiday Launches: Urgent Support for Families in Need

UPDATE: Operation Holiday has officially kicked off its annual campaign, urgently seeking donations to support struggling families this holiday season. With over 199 families and 403 children already referred for assistance, community members are encouraged to step up and help those in need.

Isabel, a mother of three from Pottsgrove, reflects on her journey with Operation Holiday, stating, “I used to read those stories when I was a kid. I always thought I would donate if I could.” Her health challenges have made it difficult for her to work, but with support from the Montgomery County Assistance Office, she is managing to provide for her daughters this holiday season.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Operation Holiday, which began in 1991 with the mission to ensure families have food and gifts during the holidays. The program has expanded its reach to include communities served by local newspapers, including The Mercury, The Reading Eagle, and others.

Last year, Operation Holiday raised nearly $85,000, benefiting 366 children and 189 families. With no overhead costs, all donations directly support local families, allowing them to purchase food and gifts. Gift cards to grocery stores and local retailers like Boscov’s and Weis Markets are provided to families to ensure they can celebrate the season without the burden of financial stress.

Isabel shares the challenges her family faces, including her youngest daughter’s health issues. “I had to push around my bills, but I made it all work,” she said. “I’m catching back up on everything.” Her determination to help others, despite her struggles, illustrates the community spirit that Operation Holiday fosters.

As the holiday season approaches, the urgency for support intensifies. Families rely on local pantries and programs like Operation Holiday as they navigate difficult times exacerbated by recent state and federal budget stalemates that have affected food assistance programs.

Operation Holiday has partnered with 21 agencies in the tri-county area to help families receive the support they desperately need. Families are referred by these agencies to ensure the program reaches those most at risk.

For those wishing to contribute, donations are being accepted online through a secure portal in partnership with TriCounty Community Network. Contributions can also be mailed to various local addresses. Each donation is tax-deductible, and names of contributors will be published in participating newspapers.

As Isabel states, “If I was ever in a position to donate, I would because I know there are people in even worse shape.” This sentiment echoes throughout the community, urging everyone to come together during this critical time.
