UPDATE: Bishop O’Dowd soared to victory, clinching the North Coast Section Division VI championship with a stunning 59-21 win over Fortuna on Saturday afternoon at Moreau Catholic High School. This triumph marks O’Dowd’s first championship title in seven years, transforming a rocky season start into a moment of celebration.
The Dragons faced significant challenges throughout the season, including a tough 1-3 start and a crucial late-season loss to James Logan. However, those setbacks are now a distant memory as they rallied behind their young stars. The victory was punctuated by a jubilant Gatorade shower for head coach Hardy Nickerson, who praised his team’s resilience and talent.
Star junior running back Lamar Ellis was instrumental, rushing for an impressive 186 yards and scoring five touchdowns on just 16 carries. Ellis set the tone early, racing for three touchdowns in the first quarter alone, giving O’Dowd a commanding 21-7 lead.
Despite a spirited effort from Fortuna, who narrowed the score to 31-21 after a 93-yard kickoff return by Michael Shaw to start the second half, O’Dowd remained unshaken. Ellis responded immediately with a dazzling 59-yard run, leading to another touchdown just one minute into the third quarter, extending the Dragons’ lead to 38-21.
Nickerson praised Ellis as “unbelievable,” highlighting his ability to find openings and break tackles. The running back’s performance was supported by a solid offensive line that created opportunities throughout the game.
As the game progressed, O’Dowd’s momentum only grew. After a crucial fourth-down stop, quarterback Christian Cermenelli-Johnson quickly moved the ball downfield, culminating in a 24-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Bryan Edwards, pushing the score to 45-21. Edwards, known for his speed, electrified the crowd again by scooping up a punt and sprinting 60 yards for another touchdown.
“This team worked hard, even during Thanksgiving week,” Edwards said. “We gave them different looks, and they couldn’t stop us. We’re too good.”
With this championship victory, O’Dowd finishes the season at 9-4 and sets its sights on the upcoming CIF NorCal regionals, with matchups to be announced soon. The Dragons’ youthful roster, including standout players like Cermenelli-Johnson and Ellis, promises an exciting future.
As emotions ran high on the field, the Dragons celebrated their hard-earned victory, ready to take on the next challenge. Coach Nickerson, hoisting the championship trophy, expressed pride in his team’s journey, stating, “They showed out tonight.”
Stay tuned for updates as Bishop O’Dowd prepares for the NorCal regionals, where they aim to continue their winning streak.
