Nez Perce Tribe Seeks Stronger Community Ties in Urgent Meeting

URGENT UPDATE: The Nez Perce Tribe is actively seeking to strengthen its ties with local governments, emphasizing community collaboration during a presentation at the Red Wolf Golf Club in Clarkston earlier this week. Elected officials from Asotin County and surrounding areas gathered for a two-hour session focused on the tribe’s significant contributions to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley.

Tribal Chairperson Shannon Wheeler highlighted the tribe’s commitment to being a proactive community partner. “When the tribe comes to town, we bring a lot to the community,” Wheeler stated. “We want to be the best neighbor you have.” With a workforce of approximately 1,500 jobs, the Nez Perce Tribe stands as the third-largest employer in the region, underscoring its vital role in the local economy.

The presentation outlined the tribe’s historical connections to the land, which spans parts of present-day Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. As of now, the tribe boasts over 3,500 enrolled members, and its leaders expressed a desire to foster partnerships rooted in mutual respect and transparency. “We want to create partnerships in good faith with no ulterior motives,” said Nakia Williamson, manager of the cultural resources program.

Recent developments include the tribe’s acquisition of the Red Wolf Golf Club in 2019, for which they are currently applying to place the land in trust. If successful, new gaming options, including sports betting and card games, may soon be introduced. Additionally, the tribe’s recent purchase of the former Umpqua Bank on Diagonal Street in downtown Clarkston is undergoing similar processes. However, no gaming activities are planned for that property, stated Nikoli Greene, executive officer of Nez Perce Tribal Enterprises.

The engagement with local officials also highlighted a shared commitment to cooperation. “We won’t always agree on everything, but we can always work together,” remarked Asotin County Commissioner Brian Shinn during the meeting. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the insights shared and voiced their aspirations for building strong relations with the tribe.

The Nez Perce Tribe’s efforts represent a crucial step toward enhancing community welfare and economic growth. As discussions continue, local leaders and tribal representatives are poised to explore new avenues for collaboration that benefit all residents of the region.
