Myrtle Beach Targets Film Industry with New Hub Initiative

UPDATE: Myrtle Beach is positioning itself as a potential new hub for the film industry, with a major production currently underway along the Grand Strand. Visit Myrtle Beach is actively working to attract filmmakers to the region, leveraging its diverse landscapes to entice producers.

President of Visit Myrtle Beach, Stuart Butler, emphasized the area’s appeal, stating, “When you think about the different types, from the beaches, inland, and the old plantation buildings, we really have a lot of diverse scenery here.” This initiative is not merely about glamour; it’s a crucial economic boost for the region, especially during the off-season.

Currently, a crew of over 50 members is on-site for a six-week shoot, significantly impacting local businesses including hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. “They’re staying in our hotels, eating at our restaurants, and visiting our attractions,” Butler explained. Additionally, local talent is being hired, creating job opportunities for residents in the production industry.

The trend of “set jetting” is also gaining traction, where fans of films and TV shows visit filming locations. Butler noted that productions filmed in Myrtle Beach could attract future visitors from across the country. “Then down the line, someone’s in Chicago watching a movie about Myrtle Beach, ‘hey, I’ve never been there, let’s look into it,’” said movie producer Ralph McCloud.

The location’s practicality for film crews is highlighted by its proximity to various scenic spots, all within 15 to 20 minutes of each other. “You can be at the ocean, in the waterway, or on a farm, and there are tons of accommodations available,” added McCloud.

With the South Carolina Film Commission now recommending Myrtle Beach as a filming location, the region stands to benefit from a rich history of successful productions, including “The Notebook,” “Forrest Gump,” “The Righteous Gemstones,” and “Outer Banks.”

As part of this initiative, Visit Myrtle Beach plans to launch a new website later this year to provide essential information for filmmakers interested in shooting along the Grand Strand. This development not only highlights Myrtle Beach’s potential in the film industry but also underscores its commitment to economic growth and community engagement.
