Mountain View Rallies Past Holy Cross in Thrilling 2A Semifinal

UPDATE: In a nail-biting finish, Mountain View has secured a spot in the District 2 Class 2A girls basketball final after overcoming a nine-point deficit to defeat Holy Cross, 50-44, in a thrilling semifinal match on February 23, 2024, at Mountain View’s J. William McLaughlin Gymnasium.

The Lady Eagles, under the leadership of coach Corey Gesford, demonstrated remarkable resilience after Holy Cross surged ahead with a strong performance early in the third quarter. With the game on the line, Gesford called for a timeout, urging his team to relax and refocus. “It was deep-breath time,” he stated. “We just had to buckle down and do the things we talked about doing.”

Mountain View responded decisively, tightening their defense and limiting Holy Cross to just eight points over the final 14 minutes. This crucial defensive strategy propelled the Lady Eagles to their 18th win of the season, setting up a championship showdown against the top-seeded Wyoming Seminary on February 27 at 4 p.m. at Mohegan Arena.

Addison Kilmer was the standout player for Mountain View, scoring 25 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, along with five steals and two blocks. Her performance was pivotal in shifting the momentum. “We just really dialed in,” Kilmer remarked. “Had to run them off the line and trust our help defense.”

The game began with Holy Cross capitalizing on their 3-point shooting, leading 25-23 at halftime. The Lady Crusaders, buoyed by the efforts of Aniya Osgood, who scored 14 points, and Mollie Urban, who added 12 points, seemed poised to pull off an upset. However, their scoring drought in the second half was their undoing.

After falling behind 36-27 following a quick burst from Holy Cross, Mountain View turned the tide. A pivotal 12-0 run saw them reclaim the lead, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure. Emily Trichilo also contributed significantly with 11 points, including a critical three-pointer that sparked the Lady Eagles’ comeback.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, Mountain View maintained their lead, with Kilmer hitting another three-pointer to extend the advantage to four points. Despite a late push from Holy Cross, including Urban’s late basket that closed the gap to 48-44, Mountain View sealed the game with two free throws from Aubrey Sanders with just 10.4 seconds remaining.

“Mountain View’s a battle-tested team,” stated Holy Cross coach Lindsay Howard, acknowledging the experience that tipped the scales in favor of the Lady Eagles. “They were able to create the plays in the crucial moments.”

Looking ahead, Mountain View aims to defend their district title against Wyoming Seminary, a rematch from last year’s semifinal that they won in overtime. The Lady Eagles have also secured a place in the PIAA Class 2A playoffs, highlighting the significance of their victory.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming championship, Kilmer remarked, “We’ve worked so hard all season… Now we’re in the hunt for the district championship. It means a lot.” The stage is set for an exhilarating final on February 27, with both teams eager to claim the title.
