Motor City Kwanzaa Kinara Lighting Set for Tonight in Detroit

UPDATE: The highly anticipated fourth annual lighting of the Motor City Kwanzaa Kinara is happening tonight in Downtown Detroit. This vibrant celebration kicks off at 4 p.m. in Cadillac Square, marking the start of Kwanzaa, which runs from December 26 through January 1.

As the sun sets, the Unity candle will be lit, illuminating the spirit of unity and community that Kwanzaa represents. The Kinara, standing at an impressive 30 feet tall, is officially recognized as the world’s tallest Kinara and symbolizes the seven principles of Kwanzaa.

This year’s program will feature lively performances from African drummers and dancers, along with special tributes that honor the heritage and culture of African Americans. The event, initiated by Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson, reflects a commitment to celebrating diversity at a time when many institutions are stepping back from such initiatives.

“At a time when institutions around the U.S. are backing away from celebrating diversity, we warmly embrace it in Detroit,” Benson stated. He emphasized the significance of Kwanzaa as a time to honor diversity and collective strength within the community.

Kwanzaa is not just a celebration; it is a time to reflect on the seven guiding principles:
– Day 1 – Umoja (Unity): Striving for unity in family and community.
– Day 2 – Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Defining and naming ourselves.
– Day 3 – Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): Building and maintaining community together.
– Day 4 – Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): Supporting our own businesses.
– Day 5 – Nia (Purpose): Committing to community development.
– Day 6 – Kuumba (Creativity): Leaving our community more beautiful.
– Day 7 – Imani (Faith): Believing in our collective strength.

Tonight promises to be a significant occasion for Detroiters and visitors alike, uniting them in celebration of culture, community, and heritage. With the lighting ceremony just hours away, the excitement is palpable.

For those planning to attend, the event is expected to draw large crowds, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the city. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a tradition that celebrates resilience and unity.
