UPDATE: Lynnwood Heroes Café has just completed a solemn ceremony to retire 275 American flags at Beck’s Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Mountlake Terrace. This urgent event took place earlier today, highlighting the community’s deep respect for the nation’s symbol.
The ceremony was led by Executive Director Gary Walderman, who is also the vice commander of the Edmonds American Legion Post 66. “We thank Beck’s for partnering with us to help with this flag retirement,” Walderman stated. “Their support of our veteran organizations is greatly appreciated.”
During the ceremony, attendees folded the flags in a traditional triangle manner, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and prayed over the flags before their dignified disposal. The flags collected by Heroes’ Café and the American Legion have been gathered over several months as part of their mission to honor veterans and the community.
Noah Ober, the funeral director at Beck’s, played a crucial role in assisting the retirement process. The flags were retired in accordance with the United States Flag Code, which mandates that worn-out flags be disposed of respectfully, preferably through burning.
The monthly meetings of Heroes’ Café, held on the fourth Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at New Life Church (located at 6519 188th St. S.W., Lynnwood), provide veterans a platform for fellowship and support. Additionally, the American Legion Post 66 has established a drop-off bin for used flags in front of the Old Edmonds Opera House at 515 Dayton St. in Edmonds.
Folding the U.S. flag is a ceremonial act rich in symbolism. Each of the 13 folds represents the original colonies, the sacrifices of veterans, and the core values of the nation. The final triangular shape honors soldiers who fought for freedom, while the stars-up position reflects the national motto, “In God We Trust.”
This event is a poignant reminder of the respect and honor that communities hold for their veterans and the symbols representing their sacrifices. As Heroes’ Café continues its mission, the community is encouraged to support these efforts by participating in future flag collections and ceremonies.
