UPDATE: The City of Kyle, Texas is bracing for a critical runoff election on December 13 as candidates Robert Rizo and Yvonne Flores-Cale battle for the mayoral seat. Following a tightly contested race, neither candidate secured a majority, prompting an urgent showdown that will determine the city’s leadership.
In the initial voting on November 4, Rizo led with 2,303 votes, accounting for approximately 42 percent of the total. Flores-Cale followed closely with 1,746 votes, or about 32 percent. The crowded field also saw Donny Wills and Andrea Villescaz lagging behind with 907 and 493 votes, respectively, creating a highly charged atmosphere for the upcoming runoff.
Voter turnout has been remarkable, with residents showing strong support for changes in city governance. In addition to the mayoral race, the City Council District 1 seat remains undecided, leading to another runoff between Bear Heiser and Courtney Goza, who received 2,061 and 1,404 votes respectively.
In a significant victory for the City Council, Claudia Zapata and Melisa Medina will represent District 3 and District 2, respectively, with Zapata achieving a decisive win of 3,246 votes against her opponent, Miguel A. Zuniga, who received 1,949 votes.
The City of Kyle also witnessed overwhelming voter approval of local governance initiatives, passing 16 out of 17 proposed charter amendments, reflecting a strong desire for change among constituents.
As the city prepares for the runoff, early voting will be available from December 1 to 5, with additional opportunities on December 8 and 9. A special Saturday session is planned for December 6 to accommodate voters unable to cast their ballots during the week. The formal details will be finalized at the November 18 City Council meeting.
