John Butler Transitions Management to Jess Keeley After 27 Years

Australian musician John Butler has announced a significant change in his management team, concluding a 27-year partnership with long-time manager Philip Stevens. The transition will officially take place in February 2024, marking the end of a collaboration that began in the late 1990s. Under Stevens’ guidance, Butler has evolved from independent releases to an internationally recognized artist, known for his dynamic performances and distinctive sound.

In a statement released on February 9, 2024, Stevens expressed the emotional weight of his decision, stating, “With very mixed emotions, I am announcing that after 27 years, I am stepping away from managing John Butler.” He described the partnership as a profound privilege, highlighting Butler’s talent and their friendship. Stevens noted that he is leaving to focus on family and to seek a less stressful future, stating, “The music industry is more complex than ever.”

Transitioning into the role of manager will be Jess Keeley, who brings over 20 years of experience in artist management. Keeley has a notable background, having worked with various successful artists, including Shania Twain, Lykke Li, MARINA, and Noah and the Whale. Currently based in Australia, she is affiliated with Wonderlick Entertainment and runs her own company, Music She Wrote. Additionally, Keeley serves as the chair of the Association of Artist Managers (AAM) and holds the position of deputy chair on the Sound NSW Advisory Board.

Keeley expressed her excitement about the opportunity, stating, “There are only a few times in a management career when your gut and passion line up with opportunity and capacity. I feel like being given the opportunity to work with John Butler is one of those lightning moments.” She acknowledged the legacy left by Stevens, affirming that his contributions will continue to resonate in the industry.

Butler also took a moment to thank Stevens for their long-standing partnership, highlighting the personal and professional significance of their collaboration. “I feel deeply honoured to have worked with such a fine human as Phil Stevens over the last 27 years,” he remarked. Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about the future with Keeley, stating, “I’m really looking forward to continuing this journey and legacy with the innovative and motivated Jess Keeley and my deeply valued, long-term collaborator Kester Sappho.”

As Butler prepares for this new chapter, the music community will watch closely to see how his career evolves under Keeley’s management. The transition represents not only a personal milestone for Butler but also a significant moment in the broader landscape of artist management in Australia.
