Howard County Announces Urgent New Year’s Service Changes Now

URGENT UPDATE: Howard County has just announced critical changes to its service schedule for the upcoming New Year’s holiday. On January 1, 2024, residents should prepare for government office closures and adjusted service hours as the community welcomes the new year.

Several key facilities will close for the day, including government offices, community centers, and local courts. Waste collection services will be suspended on New Year’s Day, shifting the Thursday collection to Friday and Friday’s to Saturday. The Harriet Tubman Cultural Center and other community centers will close early on December 31, with the last entry at 5:00 p.m.. Notably, the Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum will close even earlier at 3:00 p.m.

Residents should note that while parks will remain open, staffing will be limited. The county government will resume normal operations on January 2, designating it as an Energy Saving Day, reinforcing efforts towards sustainability.

Public transportation services will also be affected. The Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) buses will not operate on New Year’s Day. For those requiring information regarding transit schedules, assistance is available at 1-800-270-9553 or through the RTA website. Additionally, parking fees will be waived on January 1, alleviating some expenses for residents during the holiday.

Despite the closures, essential services remain fully operational. The 9-1-1 Center, along with local police and fire departments, will maintain round-the-clock staffing to ensure community safety. Residents are reminded to call 9-1-1 for emergencies, and for non-urgent needs, the contact number is 410-313-2200.

As Howard County gears up for the festivities, these changes are crucial for residents to plan ahead. For a complete list of closures and adjustments, visit the Howard County Government’s official website. Stay informed and ensure a safe start to the new year!
