Hialeah Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide After Fatal Crash

UPDATE: A 21-year-old Hialeah man, Kevin Brito Rios, has been charged with vehicular homicide following a tragic head-on collision that left one driver dead. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. on October 23, 2023, near W. 20th Avenue and W. 76th Street.

According to NBC6 South Florida News, police report that Brito Rios was driving recklessly, reaching speeds of 80 mph in a 30 mph zone when the crash unfolded. An officer attempted to pursue him after observing his 2022 Toyota Supra speeding before the collision. Witnesses described him dangerously weaving through traffic and overtaking other vehicles, showcasing his reckless behavior.

The pursuit escalated when Brito Rios failed to navigate a curve, crossing into oncoming traffic where he collided head-on with a Ford Mustang. The driver and passenger of the Mustang were rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. Tragically, the driver, whose identity has not been revealed, succumbed to their injuries the next day.

Authorities have confirmed that data extracted from the Mustang indicated Brito Rios was traveling at a minimum speed of 54 mph just before the crash, despite being in a 35 mph zone. After the collision, Brito Rios remained at the scene and was later arrested at his apartment by Hialeah police.

Currently, he is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with his bond status still under consideration as of today. The community is reeling from the tragic loss of life and the implications of reckless driving.
