Guam Community College Unveils $6.3M Renovated Success Center

URGENT UPDATE: Guam Community College (GCC) has just unveiled its renovated Student Success Center during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Friday at the Mangilao campus. This $6.3 million capital improvement project, initiated in July 2022, underscores GCC’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities for students and the wider community.

The newly renovated 6,000-square-foot building, known as Building B, is strategically located at the front of the campus. It will serve multiple vital functions, including housing the Assessment and Counseling Department, GCC Identification Card Services, the Faculty Senate office, and a state-of-the-art computer lab on the second floor, which features an outdoor veranda for student relaxation and collaboration.

“Our new Student Success Center is the heart of our campus—where student learning, creativity, and success begin,” stated GCC President Mary A.Y. Okada during the ceremony. She highlighted the pivotal role students played in driving this project, reflecting their needs and aspirations. “The student voice was clearly heard, and this building stands as proof of that,” Okada added.

Designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, the facility represents GCC’s eighth environmentally sustainable building, showcasing a commitment to eco-friendly practices. Okada expressed gratitude to her team for their dedication, stating, “Everything they do supports our students,” emphasizing the college’s motto: “Students first, mission always.”

Funding for the project came from the Governor’s Education Stabilization Fund and GCC’s Capital Projects Fund, with Okada confirming that the renovation added no debt to the college. “We’re constantly finding creative ways to fund our capital projects through multiple sources. That’s our strength—and our promise to the community,” she stated.

As the new building opens its doors, students and faculty can expect enhanced resources that will contribute to their academic and personal success. This development marks a significant milestone for GCC and reinforces its commitment to providing high-quality educational environments.
