Greenville High School Serves Festive Holiday Dinner Today

BREAKING: Greenville High School has just hosted its annual festive holiday dinner, delighting approximately 1,100 students with a traditional meal that included mashed potatoes, glazed maple carrots, and roasted ham. The event, which took place today, December 9, was organized by the school district’s food and nutrition department, ensuring every student had access to a warm holiday meal.

This special event is not only a time for celebration but also an essential opportunity for students who may struggle to enjoy such meals at home. Dan Kuk, the Food and Nutrition Director, emphasized the importance of the dinner, stating, “Not all of them get to participate in this type of meal,” and highlighted the inclusion of international students experiencing American holiday traditions for the first time.

The holiday dinner at Greenville High School is provided free of charge, as is the case for breakfast and lunch throughout the year. Kuk added, “It’s a little bit of an added expense, but the school district helps out with that.” The collaborative effort to fund the meal reflects the district’s commitment to supporting all students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In addition to the delicious food, the atmosphere was enhanced by festive decorations and Christmas music. Students volunteered alongside the DECA organization to serve homemade desserts, including apple crumble and cherry turnovers, creating an inviting and joyful environment. Emily Fox, the DECA vice president of public relations, noted, “We wanted to bring a little something extra for the holiday dinner,” showcasing the spirit of community service and camaraderie among students.

Adding to the festive cheer, Claude Johnson, a GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman, made a surprise appearance as “Santa Claude,” accompanied by The Grinch. This heartwarming visit brought smiles to many faces, with students like Gabby Pelak and Kendal Taylor expressing their gratitude for the uplifting event. “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive,” said Taylor, while Pelak noted, “It was also nice to have something to look forward to at lunch.”

As the students enjoyed their meals, the sense of community and joy filled the cafeteria, a stark reminder of the importance of togetherness during the holiday season. The school staff, including Kuk, praised the collective effort to ensure the success of this cherished tradition. “I’m so grateful for my staff and the extra effort they put into meals like this,” he said.

Looking ahead, the school district plans to continue providing these important meals, reflecting their commitment to fostering a supportive environment for all students. The holiday dinner at Greenville High School not only nourished bodies but also lifted spirits, making it a memorable event that students will cherish for years to come.
