Governor Newsom Blasts Trump After Artillery Shell Incident
UPDATE: California Governor Gavin Newsom is publicly condemning the White House after a 155-millimeter artillery shell detonated prematurely during a Marine Corps training exercise, causing shrapnel damage to vehicles on Interstate 5 over the weekend. No injuries were reported, but the incident has ignited a fierce backlash against President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 21, 2023, during a celebration marking the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary. Newsom’s office expressed outrage, stating, “The shrapnel that hit CHP (California Highway Patrol) vehicles over the weekend from Trump and Vance’s military live-munitions demonstration came from this ordnance. It’s no small thing.” A photo of the shell was also shared, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
In a series of posts on social media platform X, Newsom did not hold back, asserting, “Donald Trump and JD Vance put lives at risk to put on a show. If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them.” This comes in light of previous warnings raised by Newsom regarding the potential dangers of live ammunition being fired near civilians.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that metal shrapnel from the blast hit one of its vehicles, as well as a motorcycle in Vance’s security detail. CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado remarked, “This was an unusual and concerning situation. It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway.” His priority remains the safety of Californians and law enforcement officers.
Republican leaders quickly retaliated against Newsom’s criticisms. William Martin, communications director for Vance, dismissed the governor’s claims, stating, “The Marine Corps says it’s an established and safe practice.” Rep. Darrell Issa echoed this sentiment, arguing that Newsom was undermining military operations by initially closing the interstate for safety.
However, the incident further escalated tensions, prompting Newsom’s office to demand apologies from both Trump and Vance. “You accused the Governor of overreacting when he closed a portion of the freeway to protect the public,” the press office stated. “And now we learn … live ordinance detonated early, striking a vehicle on a closed portion of the highway during the event. Without a doubt an apology is owed — to not just Californians, but all Americans.”
The First Marine Expeditionary Force, responsible for the demonstration, stated they are investigating the incident, asserting that thorough rehearsals were conducted to ensure safety. They emphasized, “Marines fire artillery on Camp Pendleton nearly every week… We trust this system with our lives.”
As this story develops, all eyes are on the White House and the responses from Trump and Vance. Newsom’s demands for accountability resonate with many, highlighting the potential dangers posed by military exercises in civilian areas. Stay tuned as we continue to follow this urgent story, and watch for responses from the involved parties.
