Georgia DOT Awards $86.3 Million in Urgent Infrastructure Projects

URGENT UPDATE: The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has just announced the awarding of $86.3 million in contracts for vital infrastructure projects across the state. This decision was made during the monthly State Transportation Board meeting held in late October, with contracts awarded on October 31 to the lowest qualified bidders.

This massive investment encompasses 22 projects aimed at enhancing road safety and capacity, reflecting a critical focus on improving Georgia’s transportation network. The announcement comes at a pivotal moment as the state grapples with increasing traffic demands and infrastructure needs.

The largest project features a substantial $31 million resurfacing initiative on I-75/State Route 401. This project will cover 17.245 miles starting from the Florida state line and extending north of US 84/SR 38 in Lowndes County. The contract has been awarded to Reames and Son Construction Company based in Valdosta, marking a significant step in road improvements for this busy corridor.

Other key projects include:

  • Construction of a bridge on Moultrie-Lenox Road over Gum Creek in Colquitt County, valued at nearly $2 million, awarded to Southern Concrete of Albany.
  • Milling and rehabilitation of approximately 17 miles of State Route 33 in Brooks and Thomas counties, with a contract value of $4.8 million, also awarded to Reames and Son.
  • Construction of a bridge on Homerville Bypass over Woodyard Creek in Clinch County, valued at just over $2 million, awarded to Griffin Grading and Concrete, LLC from Cordele.

This new funding is crucial for addressing the growing need for infrastructure upgrades, ensuring safer travel and improved road conditions for residents and visitors alike. The investments represent approximately 72 percent of the total funds awarded to resurfacing projects, underscoring the focus on enhancing existing roadways.

As these projects move forward, residents can expect increased construction activity and potential delays in affected areas. GDOT urges motorists to remain vigilant and plan their routes accordingly.
