Former Students Relive Memories at Horace Mann Elementary Tour

URGENT UPDATE: Former students of Horace Mann Elementary in Fargo are taking a nostalgic walk down memory lane during a self-guided tour of the school, set for demolition after this school year. The emotional event occurred on November 26, 2023, allowing attendees to revisit cherished memories before the building is permanently closed.

The tour sparked fond recollections of first classrooms and other significant features of the school’s history, which spans over 110 years. Attendee Adam Korstad highlighted the transformation of the old computer lab into additional instructional space, showcasing how the school has adapted over the years. The library remains intact, filled with historical documents, including yearbooks dating back to the 1960s and PTA records from the 1930s.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to see our memories come to life,” said Leandra Ostrom, Principal of Horace Mann-Roosevelt. “We all remember our elementary schools—the smells, the activities, the teachers. Witnessing the art on the walls and the way our current teachers decorate their rooms is truly special.”

With the demolition scheduled for summer 2024, a new Horace Mann Elementary will be constructed in its place, anticipated to open in 2028. This tour is part of a year-long celebration honoring the school’s legacy in the community.

Ostrom shared an insightful moment: “A gentleman just came into the office and remarked, ‘Mr. Holmgren’s office sure looks different now.’ It’s these shared experiences that make the building special.” She emphasized the importance of memories, stating, “The people make the building. It’s about the families, the students, and the legacies built in these hallways.”

Three additional tours are scheduled before the school year concludes. The next tour will take place on December 29, 2023, from 5 to 8 p.m., with subsequent tours on April 11, 2024, from noon to 4 p.m., and May 13, 2024, from 5:30 to 8 p.m..

These events provide a heartfelt opportunity for the community to reflect on the rich history of Horace Mann Elementary, ensuring that the memories of its impact will continue long after the building is gone. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this emotional farewell!
