Family Honors Nurse Killed in Crash with New Foundation Launch

UPDATE: The Smith family is facing their first Thanksgiving without beloved medical flight nurse Susan “Suzie” Smith, who tragically died following a helicopter crash on Highway 50 last month. This Thanksgiving, the family’s grief is palpable, yet they are turning their heartbreak into action by launching the Our Angel That Flies Foundation to honor her legacy.

As families gather across the nation, the Smiths are reminded of their profound loss. Son Gabriel Smith expressed the weight of this holiday season, stating, “We are holding up the best we can right now. My mom prepared us for a lot for this.” The family gathered for Thanksgiving on November 26, 2023, and Gabriel shared poignant memories of his mother’s joyful spirit, recalling their dance at Disneyland and her knack for creating lasting memories.

Gabriel emphasized the family’s unity during this difficult time, saying, “That absence is definitely felt,” and recounted moments of laughter, such as “Hawaiian rolls flying down the table.” His mother built a welcoming home for both family and friends, creating bonds that are even more essential now.

In honor of her passion for helping others, the Smith family is establishing the foundation to organize medical missions to Central America and provide scholarships for aspiring nurses. Gabriel stated, “She had a passion for mentoring the young bloods,” and highlighted the importance of supporting women in healthcare.

The foundation aims to continue Suzie’s mission, and the family encourages donations to facilitate their goals. “Don’t wait to have that hard conversation. Don’t wait to say I’m sorry,” Gabriel urged, underscoring the importance of connection this holiday season. “If you have extra, reach out to a neighbor that might be lonely, be that family for them.”

As the Smiths navigate this challenging holiday, they are committed to keeping Suzie’s spirit alive through love, support, and new beginnings. To contribute to the Our Angel That Flies Foundation, click here to donate and support their mission.
