Edgewater’s Ben Jones Earns Army All-American Honor – Urgent Update
UPDATE: Edgewater High School’s offensive tackle Ben Jones, formerly known as Ben Bankowitz, has been selected to compete in the prestigious Army All-American Bowl on December 21, 2023, in Frisco, Texas. This recognition marks a significant milestone for Jones, a dedicated athlete who has played a crucial role in his team’s undefeated season.
Just announced, Jones’s selection highlights his exceptional performance on the field, where he has been a cornerstone of the Edgewater Eagles’ offensive line since his freshman year. With a current record of 9-0, the Eagles are champions of Class 7A District 5 and are gearing up for a critical rivalry game against Boone on October 30.
“This recognition feels really good. I try to give the glory to God,” said Jones, reflecting on his recent achievement. The honor comes after he officially changed his name to honor his stepfather, Eric Jones. “It always feels good to get some recognition,” he added.
Jones has demonstrated remarkable skill and technique, attributes he attributes to his rigorous training and coaching. He has been pivotal in helping Edgewater maintain its undefeated streak, showcasing his agility and blocking awareness as a 6-foot-3, 295-pound lineman. His commitment to technique has set him apart, making him one of the top offensive linemen in Florida.
“We’re running the ball great this year, everything is going well,” Jones stated. “We just gotta keep doing it every week.” His performance has not only drawn attention but has also solidified his recruitment to Appalachian State, where he committed on June 17.
Jones credits his former offensive line coach, Chris Jamison, along with current coaches Shermane TeArt and Kenny Thomas, for his growth as a player. “Technique is one of the most pivotal components of being an offensive lineman,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of practice translating into on-field success.
Edgewater’s success this season is a testament to the unity and resilience of the team, particularly after the departure of former head coach Cameron Duke. Despite the potential for turmoil, Jones and his teammates remained committed, demonstrating a strong sense of brotherhood and dedication.
“We had team meetings and we talked every day about how we had to have the whole team stay on track,” Jones explained. “I think that is just a testimony to how close we are, on and off the field.”
As the Eagles prepare for their upcoming game against Boone, all eyes will be on Jones, whose journey from local talent to Army All-American is inspiring many young athletes in Central Florida. His dedication, humility, and skill on the field continue to resonate, making him a player to watch as he transitions to the collegiate level.
The Army All-American Bowl is an opportunity for Jones to showcase his talents on a national stage, further solidifying his status as an elite player in high school football. As the season progresses, fans and coaches alike will be eager to see how he performs in this prestigious event.
