Dexter High School Tigers Secure $75K in National Contest

UPDATE: The Dexter Regional High School Tigers have just finished third in T-Mobile’s highly competitive Friday Night 5G Lights contest, securing an impressive $75,000 in total funding for their athletic facilities. While they fell short of the $1 million grand prize, the community’s support propelled them to an extraordinary achievement.

In a show of solidarity, the Dexter community rallied behind the Tigers, contributing to a remarkable 500,000 votes that helped clinch the third-place spot. This contest not only highlighted the local pride but also aimed at securing funds for essential upgrades, including much-needed lights for home games.

Despite receiving over 2 million votes overall, Dierks High School in Arkansas took the top prize. However, the Tigers’ third-place finish means they will receive an additional $50,000 on top of the $25,000 awarded as one of the 25 national finalists. This brings their total to $75,000, moving them closer to their goal of hosting Friday night games under the lights.

“We are incredibly thankful to T-Mobile for giving us the opportunity to put a spotlight on our amazing community,” said Dexter athletic director and assistant principal Adam Gudroe in a press release. “Our goal from the start was to add lights to our football field, and with the $75,000 we have been awarded through this competition, we are even closer to making that goal a reality.”

Guadroe highlighted the obstacles of maintaining the current grass field in the unpredictable Maine weather, emphasizing the necessity for improved facilities. The Dexter Tigers football team has never hosted a Friday night game, and this funding brings them closer to making that wish a reality.

T-Mobile will return to Dexter on November 14, 2023, to celebrate this significant achievement with the community. The company previously visited for a home football game on October 18, 2023, further connecting with the local supporters.

“While the Tigers didn’t take home the $1 million grand prize, their creativity, community pride, and all-out hustle elevated this year’s competition to new heights,” T-Mobile acknowledged in their press release.

The impact of this contest extends beyond the financial rewards; it has fostered a sense of unity and pride among the Dexter community. As the Tigers move forward, they exemplify the spirit of teamwork and determination that has resonated throughout Maine.

This significant funding will not only enhance the athletic facilities but also inspire future generations of students and athletes in the Dexter area. With the community’s continued support, the Tigers are on the path to achieving their dreams.
