Delaware County Unveils Commemorative Bell Ahead of 250th Celebration
URGENT UPDATE: Delaware County has just unveiled a stunning bell sculpture, marking a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the nation’s 250th birthday celebration. On Monday, October 23, 2023, America250PA introduced this custom-designed bell as part of its statewide public arts initiative, Bells Across PA, aimed at commemorating the upcoming anniversary of the United States in 2026.
The bell, designed by local artist Joshua Ruggeri and sponsored by Wakefern Food Corp. and Burns Family Neighborhood Markets, is currently on display at the ShopRite of Drexeline. This initiative will see a total of 108 commemorative bells placed in all 67 counties across Pennsylvania, amplifying the story of the state’s contributions to America’s journey.
Pat Burns, chair of America250PA and CEO of ShopRite, emphasized the bell’s significance, stating, “Bells Across PA is a story of the nation and Pennsylvania, with the Delco bell capturing the pride and hardworking spirit of the place we call home.” The unveiling event attracted numerous officials, including Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon and Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton, highlighting the bell’s symbolic importance in these uncertain times.
“Our commitment to democracy and self-government and the beautiful diversity of this country is vital,” said Scanlon during the event.
Ruggeri’s artwork features key elements like the soaring Eagle and the Stars and Stripes, symbolizing freedom and unity. He humorously noted that the inclusion of “Delco” on the bell was a nod to local pride, stating, “Only someone from Delco would want Delco written on there.”
The unveiling serves as a reminder of Delaware County’s rich history, with the original bell located in Chester’s historic courthouse ringing in on July 8, 1776 to announce the reading of the Declaration of Independence. In a powerful moment, this bell will ring again on July 8, 2026 to honor the nation’s freedom.
Officials expressed that initiatives like Bells Across PA foster community engagement and appreciation for public art. State Senator Tim Kearney noted that these bells remind residents of their shared history as the countdown to 2026 begins. “It shows where we’ve been and where we are headed,” he remarked.
The event also highlighted pressing political issues, with Kearney addressing the current budget impasse and a potential federal government shutdown. As the officials celebrated the bell, they acknowledged the importance of uniting as a community amid ongoing challenges.
LOOKING AHEAD: As Delaware County prepares for the monumental 250th anniversary, residents and officials alike are called to reflect on their shared heritage and contributions to the American narrative. The next milestone will be the ringing of the original bell in 2026, serving as a poignant reminder of the nation’s enduring principles of liberty and democracy.
This commemorative bell not only symbolizes a local legacy but also stands as a testament to the spirit of unity and resilience that characterizes the American journey.
