UPDATE: Chester has officially unveiled a statue of Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs, a hometown hero and the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title. The statue was revealed on November 6, 2023, and now stands proudly in the park across from Chester City Hall at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States.
Mayor Stefan Roots praised Gibbs for her groundbreaking achievements, stating, “Her story has inspired the world… The Most Dangerous Woman in the World.” With a professional martial arts career spanning three decades, Gibbs holds multiple world titles from ISKA, WKA, and WCK.
The mayor emphasized the significance of Gibbs’ legacy: “This statue stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone who walks past it. It tells them no goal is too big.” He noted that her journey reflects the spirit of Chester itself—“a story of grit, perseverance, and pride.”
Originally unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022, the statue was transferred to Chester following the university’s closure. It was gifted to the city by Villanova University, where Gibbs once excelled as an All-American basketball player and all-time leading point scorer.
Sculpted by Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze, the statue captures the essence of a champion. During the unveiling, Gibbs expressed her deep emotional connection to Chester, stating, “This statue doesn’t just represent me; it represents us, it represents Chester.”
Holding back tears, she added, “Chester is my story… Thank you, Chester, I love you.” Her remarks resonated with the crowd, reminding everyone of the collective strength and support that shaped her journey.
