Camden Hills Wins First State Football Championship with 52-26 Victory

UPDATE: Camden Hills has just clinched its first-ever state football championship with a stunning 52-26 victory over Spruce Mountain on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School. The Windjammers dominated the game, showcasing an explosive offense led by senior quarterback Hollis Schwalm.

The Windjammers entered the championship game fueled by fresh motivation—a brand new banner in their gym symbolizing their aspirations. “Football was up there with no dates on it. So I looked around and said ‘That needs to change,’” Schwalm remarked, setting the stage for an unforgettable performance. With this decisive win, Camden Hills finishes the season with a record of 10-1, marking a historic moment for the program.

In an electrifying display, Schwalm accounted for 32 points himself, rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for another. His contributions included crucial conversion passes that kept the Windjammers ahead throughout the game. “As long as I get the ball in his hands, something good is going to happen,” said Coach Chris Christie about Schwalm’s pivotal role.

The Windjammers struck early, leading 8-0 after the first quarter. By halftime, they had extended their lead to 32-12, thanks to a flurry of touchdowns, including a remarkable 67-yard touchdown run by Schwalm. The team maintained pressure in the second half, with additional rushing touchdowns from teammates Braden Beveridge, Ethan Dingle, and Ben Hoffman.

The defense played a critical role as well, forcing five turnovers against Spruce Mountain, including two interceptions by Beveridge, who also scored a touchdown. “We played with utter heart, grit, and determination today,” Christie praised his team’s efforts.

Spruce Mountain, finishing their season at 8-2, managed to score through plays by Jaxon Jewett and Owen Kelvey, but ultimately could not keep pace with the relentless Windjammers. Despite their efforts, including a kickoff return for a touchdown by Kelvey, they were unable to close the gap.

The historic nature of this victory cannot be overstated. After facing numerous challenges since the program’s inception in 2009, including a canceled season and fluctuating divisions, Camden Hills has finally emerged as champions. “We came in here confident. Our coaches knew what to do,” said Batty, reflecting on the team’s preparation.

With this championship win, Camden Hills not only secures a place in school history but also sets the stage for future success, as many young players contributed significantly this season. “This is a special group. The future looks pretty solid for us,” Coach Christie added, signaling a bright outlook for the program.

As the community rallies behind their champions, the Windjammers will now proudly add their name to the championship banner in the gym—a symbol of their hard work, perseverance, and historic triumph.
