Bulldogs Dominate Vassar Open Invitational to Kick Off Season

UPDATE: The Yale Bulldogs’ men’s fencing team has kicked off the season with a stunning performance at the Vassar Open Invitational, winning all five bouts. Just last weekend, the team showcased their dominance, beginning with a decisive 21-6 victory against Drew University before continuing their winning streak against Stevens College, Lafayette College, Johns Hopkins University, and Sacred Heart University.

Captain Jordan Silberzweig expressed excitement about the team’s preparation, stating, “After months of preparation and long morning practices, we came in hungry to compete at a high level.” The Bulldogs secured victories of 21-6 against Drew, 21-6 against Stevens, 19-8 against Lafayette, 18-9 against Johns Hopkins, and finished with a 19-8 win over Sacred Heart.

The men’s team, which concluded last season with a record of 18-7, aims to replicate its past success, especially at the upcoming Ivy League Championships in 2026. With key players like Tony Whelan, Jordan Silberzweig, and Castor Kao, who is currently ranked sixth nationally in foil, the Bulldogs are poised for a competitive season ahead.

Meanwhile, the women’s team is also off to a strong start, achieving a remarkable 6-1 record over the weekend. They dominated with a 21-0 win against Yeshiva University and a 20-1 victory against Lafayette College, solidifying their status as a powerhouse. Captain Amanda O’Donnell noted the team’s potential, highlighting the return of two starters and the impact of incoming first-years who have previously competed at the World Championships.

O’Donnell remarked, “The past meet went well. We beat six teams, including Brown, which set a really good tone for the rest of the season.” The women’s team is set to continue their momentum as they prepare for the Tri-State Shark Showcase in Brooklyn on November 23.

With both teams aiming for excellence, Yale’s fencing program is clearly ready to make its mark this season. Fans and supporters can expect thrilling matches as the Bulldogs seek to elevate their performance in upcoming tournaments and championships.
