BREAKING: A Boston Municipal Court judge has just released Richard Futrell, 46, after he was charged with assaulting a police officer during a chaotic incident at a Dorchester polling place on Election Day. The incident erupted around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the Metropolitan Baptist Church, where Futrell confronted a poll worker over access to food meant for election officials.
Authorities report that Futrell became aggressive after being told he could not partake in a buffet prepared for poll workers, claiming he was “entitled to” the food due to lost SNAP benefits under President Trump. Eyewitnesses described a scene of escalating tension as Futrell verbally berated the poll worker, stepping into her personal space and causing alarm among voters.
“The suspect then grew more agitated and continued to rant about President Trump taking away his government assistance,” the incident report states.
As the situation intensified, the poll worker felt threatened and told Futrell to leave the polling location. Instead of complying, he allegedly blocked the entrance, preventing other voters from accessing the polls. Officers were called to the scene to restore order and subsequently attempted to escort Futrell out, but he resisted, shouting aggressively and reportedly spitting on one officer.
In a struggle with police, Futrell was ultimately subdued and placed in handcuffs. He faces several charges, including assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing a public assembly, and interfering with election officials.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has requested a $1,000 bail for Futrell, highlighting the serious nature of the incident during a critical time for voters. Judge Rebecca Figueroa mandated that Futrell must stay away from the poll worker involved.
This incident raises significant questions about voter safety and the challenges faced at polling places, especially during high-stakes elections. As authorities investigate further, many are left wondering how such disturbances can be prevented in the future.
