Bella Shepard, a native of Royal Oak, Michigan, takes on a groundbreaking role in the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” which premieres on January 15, 2025, on Paramount+. Shepard is the first actress to portray a member of the newly introduced alien race known as the Dar-Sha, marking a significant moment in the long-standing “Star Trek” franchise.
Describing her experience, Shepard noted that stepping into the shoes of her character, Genesis Lythe, was both thrilling and intimidating. “I didn’t really know what to expect when I learned my character was a new species. It left me feeling lost in the beginning because I didn’t know what to go off of,” she explained. As she developed her role, she expressed excitement about creating an entire culture and race alongside the writers. “Now it’s very exciting and very fulfilling to be able to be the leader of the Dar-Sha,” she added.
Exploring the Dar-Sha and Genesis Lythe
The Dar-Sha differ from other iconic alien races in the “Star Trek” universe, such as the Romulans and Vulcans, with their distinctive facial ridges and lack of eyebrows. Genesis Lythe, a determined cadet at the newly reopened Starfleet Academy, strives to establish her own identity separate from her admiral mother. “There are so many things about Genesis that I love so much,” said Shepard. “She’s very layered: dynamic, confident, strong and smart, but under all that, she’s got a lot of insecurities. She’s still young and figuring out life.”
Set in the 32nd century, the series chronicles the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets—the first in over a century—as they train to become officers. Among the cast is Oscar winner Holly Hunter, who plays Capt. Nahla Ake, the chancellor of the academy. Additionally, Robert Picardo reprises his role as the holographic doctor from “Star Trek: Voyager,” now 900 years old.
Shepard anticipates that the series will resonate with viewers. “The rest of Season 1 is very emotional and very deep; I hope it touches a lot of people. The final episode is action-packed and full of crazy, crazy special effects,” she remarked. With filming for Season 2 already underway, she mentioned that audiences can expect to see different sides of Genesis that were not explored in the first season.
Legacy of the Star Trek Franchise
“Starfleet Academy” represents the 12th television series in the expansive “Star Trek” franchise, which began with the original series in 1966. The original show introduced audiences to the adventures of Capt. James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise, setting a precedent for diversity in casting on network television. Despite its cancellation after three seasons, it gained cult status, leading to numerous films and spin-offs that further expanded the “Trek” universe.
Shepard expressed her gratitude for being part of such a revered franchise, stating, “I’m so incredibly honored that I get to be just even a small piece of what ‘Star Trek’ means to the fans.” She acknowledged the series’ ability to foster community and inclusivity across generations, explaining, “Because it’s so inclusive and there’s a little piece of everybody in the ‘Star Trek’ universe, people for generations have been able to spot themselves and their loved ones in characters in ‘Star Trek.’”
Reflecting on her personal connection to the franchise, Shepard shared that her grandparents were long-time fans. “My grandpa’s a huge ‘Star Trek’ fan. It reminds me of him. I get to be a part of this universe and share it with him and make him proud!”
Bella Shepard’s journey from Royal Oak to the bright lights of Hollywood showcases her talent and determination. Having first appeared in films like “Oz the Great and Powerful” and series such as “Wolf Pack,” she is now poised to make a significant impact in her role on “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” As she continues to navigate her career, she remains rooted in her Michigan upbringing, cherishing memories of time spent at local favorites like the Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen.
With the legacy of “Star Trek” continuing to thrive, Shepard is excited to contribute to its narrative, aiming to inspire new generations of fans. As the series prepares to debut, anticipation builds for what lies ahead for both Shepard and the Dar-Sha.
