Bay FC Ends Turbulent Season with 1-0 Loss, Coach Steps Down

UPDATE: Bay FC’s tumultuous season in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) concluded with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss against Racing Louisville on September 24, 2023. This defeat marks the club’s 14th loss of the season and solidifies their position at the bottom of the NWSL standings.

The match at Racing Louisville saw Bay FC’s defense holding strong during a scoreless first half. However, just three minutes into the second half, Ella Hase broke the deadlock, delivering a crushing blow to a team already reeling from a challenging season. The loss underscores a dismal campaign for Bay FC, finishing with just four wins and eight draws, placing them 13th out of 14 teams.

Coach Albertin Montoya, who has faced scrutiny throughout the season due to an investigation into a reportedly “toxic” work environment, confirmed that this match would be his last at the helm. Montoya expressed gratitude towards his players, stating,

“We didn’t end the way we would’ve liked to, but I also have to say thank you to the players and to Bay FC, because regardless of the score… they never stopped competing and playing for each other.”

This season has been particularly challenging for Bay FC, which took a step back from their inaugural year performance in 2024 when they finished with an 11-14-1 record. The team has not won a match in 15 consecutive games, last celebrating a victory on June 7 against Portland.

Despite the grim overall results, defender Caprice Dydasco achieved a significant milestone by playing every minute of the regular season, earning her “iron woman” status. Dydasco is the first player from Bay FC to achieve this feat, joining just 40 other players in NWSL history.

The club is poised for further changes as they approach their third year. In addition to Montoya’s departure, Brady Stewart, the team president noted for orchestrating the club’s major event that drew over 35,000 fans to a match at Oracle Park, resigned last month, marking the end of an era for Bay FC.

As the dust settles on this challenging season, Bay FC faces a critical juncture. Fans and players alike are left to ponder the future direction of the club as new leadership prepares to take the reins. What changes will emerge in the offseason? Only time will tell, but the urgency for improvement has never been stronger.
