BREAKING: Montgomery County voters made crucial decisions at the polls, affirming the incumbents in Amsterdam and confirming key seats in the Legislature. In a significant move for local governance, all five incumbent aldermen in Amsterdam will retain their positions, keeping the Democratic majority intact at 4-1 on the Common Council, according to unofficial results released by the Montgomery County Board of Elections.
In a vital election held on November 7, 2023, three sitting Democrats successfully fended off challenges from Republican and Conservative candidates. Notably, Ward 4 Alderman Christopher Carpenter and Ward 2 Alderman Rich Holoday ran unopposed, ensuring their continued influence in city affairs.
The only contested race for a Montgomery County office saw incumbent Democrat Maria Flint Kowalczyk secure her position in District 8, defeating newcomer James Eagan on the Republican and Conservative lines. Kowalczyk garnered 452 votes, translating to a decisive 132-vote lead over Eagan’s 320 votes.
“I am honored to continue serving our community and remain dedicated to the residents of District 8,” Kowalczyk stated after her victory.
Kowalczyk’s successful campaign emphasized her commitment to local issues, marking her as one of only two Democrats in the predominantly Republican-controlled Legislature. Fellow Democrat Chad Majewski also retained his seat in District 6 without opposition.
While incumbents dominated the elections, the Legislature will welcome three new members. Thomas Elwood will fill the District 1 seat vacated by Martin Kelly, who reached the county’s term limit. Michael Muhlebeck is set to replace Herbert Allen in District 3, following Allen’s decision not to seek reelection. Additionally, Aurelio Fiorillo will step in for the late Daniel Wilson, who tragically passed away in a plane crash on July 30.
The election outcomes underscore a commitment to continuity in local governance while also introducing fresh perspectives into the Legislature. As the community reflects on the results, residents are poised to see how these elected officials will address pressing local issues moving forward.
Stay tuned for more updates as the official results are finalized and the newly elected officials prepare to take office in the coming year.
