Air Force Lt. Col. Dane Coppini to Fly Over Chiefs-Colts Game

UPDATE: A remarkable honor is set to unfold as Air Force Lt. Col. Dane Coppini, a native of Ferndale, California, will lead a flyover of four T-38C Talon jets at the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Indianapolis Colts game this Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 10 a.m. in Kansas City. This event is part of Military Appreciation Month, highlighting the commitment and sacrifices of military personnel across the nation.

Coppini, who has dedicated 15 years to military aviation and currently serves with the 87th Flying Training Squadron (known as the “Red Bulls”), expressed his excitement for this prestigious opportunity. “Being selected for a flyover is a significant honor for our squadron,” he said. “It’s a special way to show gratitude to our military families during this month of appreciation.”

Typically stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, Coppini has flown out of this premier pilot training base, which is recognized as the top producer of Air Force pilots. His squadron regularly applies for flyover opportunities, but this marks a first for Coppini since joining them about a year ago.

As a seasoned pilot, Coppini has an impressive background, having enlisted in the military 19 years ago. He initially served as an enlisted security forces member before pursuing his dream of becoming a pilot after a deployment in Afghanistan. He has since completed numerous deployments, including significant missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, showcasing his commitment to serving the nation.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Coppini noted the immense support he has received from his family and community. “Growing up in a small town like Ferndale, you don’t realize how special that environment is until you leave,” he stated. “The support from family and friends has been incredible throughout my journey.”

His mother, Carrie Coppini, expressed immense pride in her son’s achievements, stating, “We’re super proud of him! He’s done so much in his career, and this flyover is just another testament to his hard work.” The family is making plans to gather and watch the game, celebrating this proud moment with their loved one.

Coppini’s commitment to the Air Force continues as he looks forward to future opportunities in his career, aiming for a potential command position next summer. “I absolutely love what I do,” he said. “Being able to fly and train the next generation of pilots is a blessing.”

As the game approaches, the excitement builds not only for the thrilling match-up between the Chiefs and Colts but also for the special tribute to military service through Coppini’s flyover. Fans and military supporters alike are encouraged to tune in and witness this patriotic display of honor and appreciation.
